The English learning course consists of creative writing taught in class every week, with homework being given to help students perfect their skills. Written and multiple choice comprehensions are taught in class as well as grammar, punctuation and spellings to cover the KS2 level. These elements are also given in their homework to consolidate their knowledge. Literary devices are taught and is an essential part of English learning.

This forms an important part of entry into grammar schools. All types of Verbal Reasoning techniques are taught, some of which include: Letter and number sequences, analogies, letter and number codes, odd one out, anagrams and finding a four letter word within a sentence.

Verbal Reasoning has changed over the years and the emphasis is mainly on having a strong vocabulary, which is a central focus whilst teaching in class. We ensure students understand word definitions, can work out synonyms and antonyms, shuffled sentences and cloze words and sentences.

Students are sitting numerous exams set by an array of boards and have every opportunity to practise in class and homework; a myriad of exam papers in the CEM, CSSE, GL and Sutton boards are incorporated in the English course from the very beginning of Year 5.
